What Happens in a Prayer Session?
The emphasis is prayer through listening to God, as Jesus did, empowered by the Holy Spirit. A full hour is allowed, whether to individuals, couples, or parents with children.
We first explain that we are going to listen to a brief explanation of why the person has come, and that intercessors are praying in a separate room during the session. We also explain that we shall ask for God to put His finger on the root cause or hinge point of the problem to reveal how He sees it, and that gifts of God’s spirit, as biblically listed (Romans 12, Corinthians 12-14, Ephesians 4:1-3 and I Peter 4) are used. We check to see if people are happy about proceeding and emphasize that they are in control and can call a halt at any time.
We begin by praying for our own spiritual cleansing and await God’s starting point. This may come as a picture, a word or phrase, which will mean nothing to us, but we offer it to the person. It usually proves to be the key that unravels the issue. God may develop whatever has been put in focus during the session immediately. If God speaks by tongues and interpretation, we write it down for the person to take away. We also include any scripture that is revealed during the time of prayer. At the conclusion of the session we will either ask the intercessors to join us to explain what they received in support prayer, or bring the copy down to discuss with those who have come for prayer. This is once again, up to the individual(s) who have come for prayer.
We try to end positively with questions answered. The problem may be resolved, or there may be other sessions. Often people want to come back, and it is a joy to hear how God has led them. “As straight-line Anglican Bible Christians, we believe this pastoral ministry reveals the compassionate heart of God for His people. It is the gift of God’s Spirit for His church.” (Peter Newton)
