We are so glad you are interested in reading more about joining the Advent! Whatever brings you to this page, we look forward to helping in any way we can. As you read along below, feel free to contact Fontaine Pope, our Newcomer Coordinator (205.443.8562 or Fontaine@CathedralAdvent.com), at any point. She will be glad to answer any questions and provide guidance along the way.
How do I join?
Joining the Advent is relatively simple. If you have been baptized and are coming from another church (whether an Episcopal church or one of another denomination), we need to have your baptismal records from your previous church. Contact Eva Beard, Parish Records Secretary, at 205.226.3510 or Eva@CathedralAdvent.com.
If you are joining the Advent afresh (not coming from another church), speak with one of the ministers or call Eva Beard, and we can take it from there. As you speak with one of the ministers, they can also talk to you about Baptism and/or Confirmation.
What is Baptism?
Baptism is the sacrament through which we first enter the Christian family. Baptism is always available for unbaptized persons of any age. Contact any clergy member for arrangements.
What is Confirmation?
Confirmation allows you to profess publicly your faith in the Lord, and confirm the promises of God spoken over you at your baptism. In the Episcopal Church, a bishop is present to witness your confirmation of these promises. As the Book of Common Prayer (BCP) states, it is a way for an individual to “express a mature commitment to Christ,” and is also a formal way of joining the Cathedral Church of the Advent.
What is required of those to be confirmed?
“It is required of those to be confirmed that they have been baptized, are sufficiently instructed in the Christian Faith, are penitent for their sins, and are ready to affirm their confession of Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.” (BCP p. 860)
How can I become “sufficiently instructed in the Christian Faith”?
The Inquirers’ Class is the best place to start! It is a nine-week series on Sundays, 10:10-10:50 a.m., that will give you the basics of Christianity. It will give you an idea of what the Advent believes and why we believe it. There are usually two sessions each year; you may join either. The fall session begins the Sunday following Labor Day, and the winter/spring session begins the last Sunday in January.
When is Confirmation?
Contact Fontaine Pope, Newcomer Coordinator, at 205.443.8562 or Fontaine@CathedralAdvent.com, and she will be able to tell you the date and time of the next Confirmation service.
