We moved to Birmingham from out of state in May 2020 — not a great time to move to a new city! When we joined a small group at the Advent in fall 2021, Birmingham finally started to feel like home. The rhythm of meeting each week with a core group of fellow believers has provided steadiness and meaning in our lives. Our group is made up of couples in different stages of life, and we’ve loved having the different perspectives and wisdom that comes from that.
We usually begin each week with “highs and lows,” which is a simple way for us to share honestly about our celebrations and struggles. Over the past year, we’ve read through Ephesians, discussed Tish Harrison Warren’s Prayer in the Night, a book about the compline prayer, and shared our favorite Psalms. We’ve also tried out tools like the “discovery” method and Lectio Divina, an ancient method of scripture reading and meditation. And we’ve eaten a good bit of Mexican food, too.
Throughout the week, we regularly share articles, podcasts, and music that encourage us in our faith — as well as ways we can pray for each other. We also like to have a little good-natured fun at each other’s expense…
