Dean’s Bulletin Board 4.17.2019

For those of you who are following the goings on in the Anglican Communion, the Archbishop of Canterbury has spoken publicly about his decision not to invite the spouses of same-sex partnered bishops to Lambeth 2020. Welby reasons, “I had to consider … getting as many people as possible there and excluding as few as possible. It’s a lose-lose situation.”
I am very sorry that it has come to this. It is also unsettling that Archbishop Welby thinks that by simply excluding the spouses (three in the entire Communion), traditional bishops will attend the conference. I hate that the spouses are being politicized as it is unfair to them and does not get to the heart of the problem. What is keeping most of the bishops of the Anglican Communion away is the presence of those bishops who willfully disregard the teaching of the Bible concerning marriage and give no thought to the wider Anglican Communion. If invitations are being considered, Welby might start with bishops in the Episcopal Church (USA), the Scottish Episcopal Church, and the Anglican Church in Canada.
