Men’s Ski Retreat | February 20-22, 2020
Men of the Advent are invited to join their brothers in Christ February 20 – 22 in Park City, Utah for a ski retreat weekend.
Logistics:
– Ski Thursday, February 20 — Saturday, February 22.
– Choose your own flight to/from Salt Lake City.
– Advent will rent two vans for transportation during the trip. As possible, we will take as many people as fly in in the morning and afternoon to our houses in Park City.
– Space is available for 20 participants. Our group will stay in very large condos, set up to sleep a lot of people. Please be aware chance that you may sleep on a bunk bed or share a bed with another person. Sleeping assignments will be done with the oldest person on the trip getting first pick and the youngest person getting the last.
– This trip is limited to Advent members until December 7, 2019. No outside friends may register before this date.
Cost: $1,655 (the cost of your flight to/from Salt Lake City is not included in this fee)
This payment covers the following: lift pass, transportation during the week, and housing. It also covers services of Brownell Travel, through whom you can book your rentals or arrange for other needs. Payment is non-refundable unless we can find someone to replace you if you need to back out (which we probably can.) Each participant is responsible for his own ski rentals, food, plane tickets, and other incidental costs.
Spiritual Commitments:
The primary purpose of this trip is to grow in relationships with other men and to grow in our relationships with Jesus. We are going to ski full days (first tracks and last man down) and get the most out of that end of the trip. At the same time, the aim of this trip is to enjoy skiing and to receive spiritual and relational edification. To that end, below are commitments you are making by signing up for the trip:
(1) Attend a preparatory meeting Sunday, February 2 at 3:00 p.m. at Cranmer House to go over details and set the spiritual tone.
(2) Fill out the journal/workbook before the trip that will ask you to think about your life, story, and inner life in a manner that is somewhat vulnerable and penetrating.
(3) On the trip, share reflections from the workbook with another man on one lift ride. Then listen to that man on the next lift ride. Say a prayer for that man after he shares his story.
(4) Attend the (very) short devotional before we head to the slopes in the morning. Attend the talk at night from our speaker.
(5) Do not abuse alcohol. It’s no problem to have a couple of drinks, but we do not want people getting drunk and killing the spiritual climate for the group as a whole.
Daily Agenda:
– Get up early, have a short devotional, and all head to the slopes before the lifts open.
– On one of the first rides of the morning, share a story on the way up. (The workbook will help you cultivate and construct stories from different themes in your life. Ex: Fatherhood – what was your relationship with your dad like? What was your dad like? How does that impact you now? How does that impact the way you parent?) For this reason, it may be edifying to find a buddy or person you trust within the Advent to go along with you on the trip. It could help deepen the friendship.
– Come home and unwind.
– Have a talk from our speaker.
– Have dinner altogether.
