    Dean’s Bulletin Board 8.23.2018

August 23, 2018| Posted By Charles Gaston

Scotty Sauls, speaker at our Rooted conference and hosting the next Rooted conference in October, has written a great piece on the emotional toll of pastors. Like him, I’m blessed to be serve a congregation that understands my limitations and doesn’t make unrealistic demands on my family (praise God for the Advent), but the toll […]

While traveling abroad this summer, I was struck by the content of foreign newspapers.  That is, just how much news was in them.  It alarms me that news websites and newspapers in the States have such limited coverage, leaving us in the dark on issues they do not deem newsworthy. This piece, from the Australian […]

Fleming Rutledge: Why Being ‘Spiritual’ Is Never Enough

June 2, 2018| Posted By Charles Gaston

Americans increasingly identify as “spiritual but not religious.” Radical faith goes beyond both. by Fleming Rutledge in Christianity Today | May 2018 We hear a good deal today about “the triumph of the human spirit.” Books and movies about disasters are frequently marketed as triumphs of the human spirit, even though they often portray examples […]

What dissecting bodies taught me about the passion story and life after death. Kathleen G. Tallman| Christianity Today, April 20, 2018 I sigh and look at the remains on the table in front of me: a pile of bones, muscles, ligaments, and organs. They are signs of dissecting, learning, and integrating knowledge. At the end […]

Our plan for Ash Wednesday (today) is to preach Jesus Christ and him crucified.  In the Episcopal diocese of El Camino Real, they and their bishop are taking a different approach. http://amp.sanluisobispo.com/entertainment/arts-culture/article199143744.html  Even the Babylon Bee did a send up: http://babylonbee.com/news/37-episcopalians-remaining-planet-vote-stop-using-male-pronouns-god/ – Andrew

It is as if our denomination has grown so extreme that it escapes notice.  The postman biting the dog no longer makes news.  I post this because I have already received a number of emails asking if the story is true—it is.  But rather than react in self-righteousness, let us pray for our denomination and […]

This article is a follow up to my last sermon on Mark 1 about settling for the experience and not seeking the experience giver.  I wish I had read this before I preached. It is about Eastern Orthodoxy, but you could easily substitute ‘Anglicanism’ where it reads ‘Orthodox’ and it is spot on. https://www.whitehorseinn.org/article/a-call-for-orthodox-churches-to-preach-the-gospel/ (Subscription […]

Wonderful news from Rwanda.  Let’s continue to keep Bishop Mbanda, Chantal, and Shyira diocese in our prayers.  This will mean that Sam Mugisha will become diocesan earlier than expected. (In related news, Sam will be with us next month!) http://www.anglicannews.org/news/2018/01/bishop-of-shyira-laurent-mbanda-elected-to-lead-anglican-church-in-rwanda.aspx  – Andrew

    Cathedral Church of the Advent

Advent is a gospel-centered church, with a “living, daring confidence in God’s grace” evident in any of our programs and ministries. Holding to what the Letter of Jude calls “the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints”, this gospel focus finds the Cross and Resurrection of Jesus ever and only at the center.
