Choral Eucharist for Ascension Day | Thursday, May 09

The Cathedral Choir will sing Choral Eucharist for Ascension Day on Thursday, May 9 at 6:00 p.m. in the Nave. The Feast of the Ascension is one of the seven major feast days in Anglican tradition. The service will include music of Herbert Howells, Gerald Finzi, and Charles Villiers Stanford. Canon Pinter will be the preacher and Celebrant. At the conclusion of the service, Director of Music and Organist Fred Teardo will perform The Ascension, a four-movement suite by 20th century French composer Olivier Messiaen. The work was originally conceived for orchestra and completed in 1933. A later Messiaen arranged to suite for organ, replacing the third movement with new music more idiomatic to the organ. The evocative titles of each movement are descriptive images of the Ascension, powerfully painted by the music.

Come join us in celebration of the Ascension of our Lord, and worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.

The service will also be live-streamed from our website at https://adventbirmingham.org/live/.
