I hear comments from time to time that traditional choral led Sunday gatherings is under threat. I believe they are right, but would disagree as to the primary reason. Most who speak with me say that it’s because of ‘praise bands’ and ‘contemporary worship’, and certainly that is a factor. (Let’s also not forget that hymns and the organ were the contemporary worship and praise band of the 18th Century!) But as previous articles posted on the Bulletin Board have said, the main problem is that new organists are not being raised up.
The question for the Advent is what are we going to do to ensure our choral tradition continues? Fred Teardo and I talk about this often and we are not content to sit idly by, simply hoping it just works itself out.
