A Word from the Dean in the September 17, 2017, Adventurer
With our new program year underway, I am excited to share with you about our visioning plan, and what we have to look forward to as a parish family in the coming weeks.
Three booklets – This Sunday, three book- lets will be available around the church, laying out what many, many Adventers have been prayerfully discerning over the last year. As the central booklet describes in its title – An Affirmation of Purpose – it has become clear that our whole plan affirms that where we have been is guiding us in our way forward. With humble and great gratitude for all who have come before us, we are going forward with a living, daring confidence in the grace of God known in the gospel of Jesus Christ. What is evident is that our confidence rests not in ourselves, but in our Lord and what he has done for us. From there, it is the clear matter of continuing to do what we have been doing in this place for decades: proclaiming the freeing power of the gospel, and making disciples in the places where God has placed us. The second booklet will be a trifold, and lays out all of the tenets and ideas, giving us a way forward in our affirmation of purpose.
Parish-wide prayer – I am particularly excited about the third booklet, and our engagement in six weeks of parish-wide prayer. We will take a week and pray about each of our tenets – Worship, Communication, Shepherding, Outreach, Discipleship, and Ministry Development. The booklet gives each day a short devotion, a verse or two of Scripture, and a prayer. Of course, we hope the Spirit will lead all of us to pray throughout the days of these six weeks! We will begin praying as a church on Sunday, September 24. I hope all reading this will join me and many other Adventers, as we pray for our church and our life together. Will you join me in this?
Dean’s Classes – I will be taking three Dean’s Classes to explore the vision of the Advent with you, by looking at two tenets each class: this Sunday, September 17, as well as on October 1 and 8. I hope to leave plenty of time during these classes for interaction, as we engage our vision as a church together.
Website and more – We will also be developing parts of the website to communicate more fully our plan, letting it serve as the central place to which we can return in the weeks and months to come. Plans are also underway for a short video, which will help us share together the Lord’s vision for his church. I look forward to letting you know about that soon as well.
All in all, please continue to join with me in praying for the Lord’s work here. These past months of intentional discernment have told us that we are called together to the same, clear, gospel-ministry that has been the Advent’s reason for existence from the beginning.
Hope to see you in church this week, and to continue to share with you our vision.
