Worship at the Advent

Our family of faith gathers for worship services on Sunday mornings and evenings, as well as on Thursday mornings, at our church in downtown Birmingham. Our traditional Sunday morning services take place at 7:30, 9:00, and 11:00 a.m. in the Nave (our primary worship space). These services feature sacred music led by the Cathedral Choir. At 11:00 a.m., a second service takes place in the Refectory and features music led by Advent Birmingham: a group of musicians who use modern instruments. Advent Birmingham also leads our 5:00 p.m. service, held in the Nave. Our Thursday morning service takes place at 8:30 a.m. in the Nave and is led by a band comprised of mostly volunteers.

All our services have a sermon preached by Advent clergy. Most services at the Advent typically last about an hour. Click here for more information on the structure of our services (our “liturgy”).

Parking

On Sunday mornings, metered parking on the streets around our downtown building is free. Please use any open space. We are grateful to  have complimentary parking available to us in the Financial Center tower on Sunday mornings, accessible on Fifth Avenue North, midway between Twentieth Street and Richard Arrington Junior Boulevard. If you park in the parking garage, enter the Advent across the alley (look for the purple Welcome sign by the door).

Entrances

Our historic downtown church building has grown alongside the City of Birmingham. Over the years, we have added a number of entrances. On Twentieth Street, enter through our large wooden doors directly into the Nave. On Sixth Avenue, enter through the walkway by our Bookstore sign, or through the entrance under the awning at the corner of Sixth Avenue North and Richard Arrington Junior Boulevard.

Attire

You are always welcome at the Advent regardless of how you dress. We also understand that to feel comfortable in a new environment it is helpful to understand what others wear in that context. Many Adventers choose to wear jackets and dresses to the morning services held in the Nave, giving these services a “dressed up” feeling. This concept extends to most of our Christmas and Easter services. Many who attend our Refectory, 5:00 p.m., and Thursday morning services choose to wear less formal attire.

Children

We are committed to providing safe and sound Christian Education experiences for children. Infants and toddlers find caring and enriching environments in our Nursery, open during our 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., and 5:00 p.m. worship services on Sundays. On Sunday mornings, three- and four-year-olds spend the entire morning in classrooms. Children in kindergarten through third grade begin worship services with their parents in the Nave at 9:00 a.m. and are dismissed before the sermon for Sunday school classes, which end at 10:50 a.m. Children in fourth grade through high school can attend the entire 9:00 a.m. service with their parents, before attending Sunday school classes by age group following the service. Children attending the 7:30 a.m., 11:00 a.m., and 5:00 p.m. services on Sundays worship with their parents.

Adult Education

On Sunday mornings at 10:10, adults are welcome to attend one of a number of Sunday school classes led by faithful and gifted teachers with a heart for the gospel. On the third Sunday each month, the Forum is a gathering which creates space for education and discussion following our 5:00 p.m. service. Class schedules are posted each week on our social media pages and in our Adventurer newsletter. Recordings of many of our classes are available on our Audio page
