Holidays & Seasons

From our Lenten Preaching and Lunches series each Spring to our Christmas Eve services each December, the vibrant and active Advent congregation offers unique opportunities for fellowship throughout the year.

RALLY DAY

The first Sunday after Labor Day every year, Adventers celebrate the start of a new year with a special 9:00 a.m. service in the Nave that features a gospel-centered skit and Sunday school teacher commissioning. In the evening, we enjoy fellowship at a family-friendly picnic at the Birmingham Children’s Zoo.

Lessons & Carols

The Cathedral Church of the Advent offers several services of Lessons and Carols every year during the Advent season, leading up to Christmas. These services are based on a structure popularized by Kings College, Cambridge (in England) and features passages of Scripture read, anthems, hymns and carols sung, drawing all who attend more deeply into the story of the coming of Christ. The Advent offers these services during one of our Sunday morning services, on a Thursday evening in December, and on a Sunday evening during our 5:00 p.m. service.

Christmas at the Advent

December is a special month at the Advent, filled with  services and activities that celebrate the Advent season, remembering Christ’s first coming and expecting his coming again. Excitement builds toward our anticipated Christmas Eve services and Christmas Day service. Our worship spaces are decorated with Christmas greenery and candles, creating a unique, beautiful, and traditional Christmas experience in downtown Birmingham.

LeNT at the Advent

Running continuously since 1908 and beginning on Ash Wednesday of every year, our Lenten Preaching and Lunches mark a time of openness and generosity at the Advent. Guest preachers come from across the United States and around the world to share the gospel each weekday at 12:05 p.m. Hundreds of Advent volunteers turn our space into a restaurant, serving delicious lunches to all who enter.

Holy Week & Easter

Our Holy Week services include the last week of our Lenten Preaching and Lunches, as well as special services on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. We have five glorious services on Easter Sunday with music led by the Cathedral Choir, accompanied by a horn section.
