Joining the Advent Family

Membership 5

We are so glad that you are considering joining our church family. The Advent has a living, daring confidence in the grace of God through the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is not in self-confidence that we live. It is in Christ-confidence. We exist to proclaim the freeing power of Jesus Christ and to make disciples wherever God has placed us.

For additional information about membership, please complete our interest form, and our Newcomer Coordinator, Fontaine Pope, will contact you

Membership 6Anyone wishing to join the Advent first attends our membership class series called the Inquirers’ Class. It is a seven-week series that allows us to get to know you as you get to know the Advent, learning what we believe and why. For more information, please complete our interest form, and our Newcomer Coordinator, Fontaine Pope, will contact you.

Baptism is the sacrament through which we all first enter the Christian family. Baptism is always available for unbaptized persons of any age.

Confirmation allows you to profess publicly your faith in the Lord, and confirm the promises of God spoken over you at your baptism. In the Episcopal Church, a bishop is present to witness your confirmation of these promises. As the Book of Common Prayer (BCP) states, it is a way for an individual to “express a mature commitment to Christ,” and is also a formal way of joining the Cathedral Church of the Advent.

“It is required of those to be confirmed that they have been baptized, are sufficiently instructed in the Christian Faith, are penitent for their sins, and are ready to affirm their confession of Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.” (BCP p. 860) The Inquirers’ Class is the best place to start receiving sufficient instruction.

Confirmation at the Advent takes place once every year, typically in the spring. During your Inquirers’ Class cycle, you’ll learn more about the ceremony and dates.

We celebrate major life milestones at the Advent and revel in God’s many lifelong blessings. In general, membership is required for baptisms, weddings, and funerals hosted at the Advent. Contact Robin Turner (Robin@CathedralAdvent.com) for additional information.
